Austria Captures First Victory in FIP European Championships

In desperate need of a victory after losing their opening game in the FIP European Championships, Austria produced a strong showing against Germany to capture the crucial 6-4.5 victory at Santa Maria Polo Club.

Conceding 1.5 goals on handicap at the beginning of the match, Austria quickly erased that deficit with two goals in the opening chukka. Unable to convert any of their seven shots in the first half, Germany remained scoreless, allowing Austria to build a 4-1.5 lead at halftime. Diego Braun led the way for Austria with four Penalty 2 conversions, while also assisting on a Martin Bleier field goal in the opening chukka. Germany reorganized to outscore Austria 3-2 in the second half, all three goals coming off the mallet of Emil Grabosch, but conceded two penalty conversions in the final chukka to Braun that sealed their fate in the 6-4.5 defeat. Germany returns to play in a must-win match against Italy on Thursday.
