Play Breakdown of the Month: Trailing the Ball Carrier

When playing off the ball offensively, trailing the ball carrier is important to support your teammate and put yourself in a position to pick up a loose ball. It is important to follow on the right of way, giving the teammate the first opportunity to play the ball, preventing the defense from making a play.

In this play from Facundo Sola in the USPA Gold Cup, there are three key moments that demonstrated the execution leading to a goal. These are:

  • Sola sacrificed making a play on the ball to fall in behind the ball carrier and target the defender that is currently on the right of way
  • Off ball ride-off to move the defender from the right of way
  • Establish himself on the right of way and pick up the loose ball when missed by the ball carrier
