The final of the 2021 Copa Zafiro featured Cotterel, led by Poroto Cambiaso, capturing the decisive 10-7 victory against Tamera in the conclusion of 10 days of competition at the prestigious La Dolfina Polo Club.
Led by five goals from Cambiaso, Cotterel finished an exceptional 10 for 14 (71%) shooting from the field, finishing their runs to goal with accuracy. The fast-paced final produced just two penalty attempts for Tamera, leaving the outcome to be decided in open play. Cotterel’s youthful line-up also featured an energetic Lucas Escobar, who contributed three goals and effective defense to help Cotterel claim the advantage in open play and hold off the efforts of Tamera to capture the three-goal victory.
Conceding two goals on handicap to begin the game, Cotterel quickly erased the difference by the end of the first chukka with Cambiaso completing two long runs to goal. Playing complete end-to-end polo, Cambiaso combined with Lucas Monteverde Jr. to defend against any Tamera attack, holding their opponents scoreless throughout the entire first half. Scoring four goals and adding an assist to Jenny Luttrell Benardoni in the first half, Cambiaso contributed on all five goals to give Cotterel a commanding 5-2 lead.
Finally ending their drought from the field, Tamera’s Alejandro Poma made an impact with two impressive goals, but every tally was met by a response from Cotterel, who maintained their three-goal lead. Effectively using the pass, Cotterel produced three goals, two of which were assisted, in a back and forth fifth chukka as Tamera continued to push to close the gap, but ultimately the efficiency of Cotterel proved to be the difference in the match. Escobar’s third goal in the sixth chukka secured the victory for Cotterel as the claimed the honours of 2021 Copa Zafiro champions.
