The first semi-final in the 2021 FIP European Championship at Santa Maria Polo Club resulted in Italy booking the first spot in the final with the 5-3 victory over Netherlands.
Looking to continue their undefeated run through the tournament, Italy faced a determined Netherlands team that took an early 1-0 lead on a Penalty 2 from Robert Watson. Despite producing twice as many shots on goal, Italy struggled to convert their opportunities, shooting just 17% from the field. Held without a field goal in the first half, Italy remained even with Netherlands due to two penalty goals, but their fortunes turned in the second half. Gregorio Gelosi gave Italy their first lead, scoring two goals in the decisive third chukka. Italy’s offense relied on three penalty goals with Netherlands unable to produce enough chances to restore the tie. Holding a 4-2 advantage, Italy maintained the difference throughout the final chukka, holding off a late push from Netherlands to secure the 5-3 victory.
