Making a successful debut in the 2021 FIP European Championships at Santa Maria Polo Club, Netherlands relied on the perfect 6 for 6 penalty shooting of Robert Watson in the 8-5.5 victory over Switzerland.
In search of their first victory after an opening loss to Spain, Switzerland matched Netherlands stride-for-stride in open play, producing two field goals each. Beginning the match with a 1.5 goal advantage on handicap, Switzerland’s Fabio Meier had an exceptional showing, finishing with all four of his team’s goals. However, foul trouble for Switzerland proved to be the difference in the match as Netherlands’ Watson was sent to the penalty line on six different occasions, converting each opportunity, while also adding a field goal to lead his team to 8-5.5 victory.
