As we gear up for the US season, we take a look at Diego Cavanagh's performance last season where he played for Tamera alongside Matias Torres Zavaleta, Alejandro Poma and Segundo Saravi. Playing in the number 4 shirt, he brought his years of experience to a talented and hungry side and played a pivotal role in the four man dynamic switching effortlessly between defense and attack.
The stats speak for themselves as to the value added to the side. An impressive 69.8% penalty accuracy which saw him score 37/53 penalties, was a key factor in him being up there with the highest scorers in the Gauntlet overall with 61 goals. His field shooting accuracy (37%) was brought down slightly by 9 unsuccessful attempts at goal from outside the 60. But while this may seem like a negative, it is actually proven to be one of his signature moves when playing the back position, shooting at goal from far back in the field, opening the game, creating space for his teammates to run in to and gaining ground even if the ball doesn't go through the posts.
Sitting deep on the field, his role was more about creating positive plays and opportunities for Saravi and Poma, a responsibility which he excecuted well. However his field placement and ability to read and anticipate the plays, combined with speed and agility meant that he was also well placed for steals and interceptions that turned into runs to goal or assists (of which he is credited with 13).
He manufactured 38 fouls called in his favour, a useful way of gaining advantage both in terms of ground gained and scoring opportunities.
In the 2025 US Gauntlet of Polo, which consists of CV Whitney, USPA Gold Cup and the US Open, he will be playing for Tamera once again, this time alongside Adolfo Cambiaso, a competitive team which will be one to watch, especially as they will be extremely well mounted with the Cambiaso organisation behind them. This is a powerful combination with years of experience playing together under their belts.
He excels in areas including:
