As we gear up for the US season, we take a look at Diego Cavanagh's performance during the UK season where he played for La Dolfina Great Oaks, reaching the finals of both the Queen's Cup and the Gold Cup, losing out to Talandracas in the former and Dubai Polo Team in the latter. Playing in the number 3 shirt, he brought years of experience to an otherwise young, albeit talented, side and played a pivotal role in the four man dynamic.
The stats speak for themselves as to the value added to the side. While Poroto Cambiaso was arguably the attacking force within the team, with 113 shots on goal to Cavanagh's 64, Cavanagh led on overall scoring due to his exceptional 93.5% penalty accuracy (29 in out of 31).
Sitting deeper on the field than Poroto, his role was more about creating plays and opportunities for Bacon, Hall and Cambiaso, a responsibility which he excecuted well. However his field placement and ability to read and anticipate the plays, combined with speed and agility meant that he was also well placed for steals and interceptions that turned into runs to goal. A 52% scoring accuracy from the field meant it wasn't just from the penalty line that he was makng the difference.
He manufactured 32 fouls called in his favour, a useful way of gaining advantage both in terms of ground gained and scoring opportunities. 15 assists and 34 throw ins won demonstrate his positive impact on the feld.
He excels in areas including:
In the 2025 US Gauntlet of Polo, which consists of CV Whitney, USPA Gold Cup and the US Open, he will be playing for Tamera alongside Adolfo Cambiaso, a competitive team which will be one to watch. This is a powerful combination with years of experience playing together under their belts.
