As the US high goal season draws nearer, we take a look at some of the stand out players of last season.
With out a doubt, one of the most formidible opponents on the polo field anywhere in the world is young Poroto Cambiaso, 10 goaler in his own right and son of world famous Adolfo Cambiaso. And this year in Wellington, Florida, backed by the impressive La Dolfina organisation, Poroto's 2024 US season was an especially successful one.
Poroto is not only a highly skilled player, but he is a crowd favourite. His ball skills and riding ability are unmatched and while these make him an exceptional individual player already, it is his team management skills and his ability to create plays for his teammates which makes the teams he heads up so successful. Traits that are often attributed to more "experienced" players, Poroto has an ability to open up the field, anticipate and read plays and create opportunities to get the best out of his three teammates. This quality stood him in good stead last season as he led his La Dolfina side to win 2 out of 3 Guantlet of Polo finals against his father's arguably more established team.
Top goal scorer of the Guantlet, with 87 goals over 15 matches (63 field goals and 24 penalties) and a shooting average of 48% (with 30 attempts from outside 60 yards), he is also credited with 31assists, double the amount of any other player throughout the season (except Polito Pieres who is credited with 37). This is a testement to his reading of the field, his team plays and his pinpoint passes opening up the game and encouraging full team combination plays.
He excels in areas including:
- Hook
- Ride-off
- Individual Plays
- Shooting
