Largely regarded as the greatest talent in the sport of polo, Adolfo Cambiaso’s storied American career has spanned across two decades and has accumulated countless accolades including nine U.S. Open Championship titles. Winning his first U.S. Open in 1999 with Outback, Cambiaso’s most recent title was earned in 2021. Noted as one of his most personal victories, Cambiaso claimed the victory alongside his son Poroto, whom since turning professional had competed with his father in South Florida until this year.
Featuring an all-Cambiaso lineup on the podium in this year’s Gauntlet of Polo, Cambiaso and Valiente took the C.V. Whitney Cup, while Poroto and Scone raised the USPA Gold Cup. Vying for his tenth U.S. Open title, Cambiaso faced Scone in quarterfinal competition where father-and-son faced each other for the first time in a spirited and physical matchup. Celebrating his 48th birthday on the day of the highly anticipated contest, Cambiaso wasn’t quite ready to pass the torch to his son putting together a phenomenal game on both sides of the ball. Complimenting his strength on defense and ability to facilitate plays, Cambiaso won 8 thrown in’s and racked up a game leading 4 assists. Largely managing play and creating space in the field for teammates Criado Jr. and Gonzalez, Cambiaso contributed two goals of his own in Valiente’s impressive 11-9 victory.
Cambiaso enters the semifinal of the U.S. Open with 37 goals and 14 assists. Earning most of his offensive statistics from the field, Cambiaso is shooting 59% inside 60 yards and has earned three goals on powerful shots outside the 60-yard marker. Ranked second in the competition in throw in’s won at 67, Cambiaso’s mental fortitude and ability to read the field demonstrates the power and precision of the 10-goaler.
Armed with one of the most impressive strings of Argentine bred horses, the La Dolfina/J5 Equestrian organizations have earned four Best Playing Pony awards. Receiving ribbons for “Dolfina Lapa C07” and “Dolfina Nostalgia,” Cambiaso alongside Valiente’s team owned Bob Jornayvaz have been at the forefront of cloning technology. Relying more on his string as his career progresses, Cambiaso’s deep understanding of the tactical side of the game continues to flourish on the field aided by the power of polo’s greatest equine athletes.
