The Polo Analyst- Offside Cut Shot

The offside cut shot is a swing technique that can be used anywhere on the field, but is often seen when a player is attempting a pass to a teammate, or more commonly on shots to goal. Similar to the neckshot, the cut shot is a swing technique that changes the direction of the ball from moving parallel with the horse's stride to away on an angle to the right. It is utilized while the horse maintains their pace and doesn't require a check and turn that can ebe unavailable due to oncomong defenders or not enough time and space.

In this example from the 2022 Ylvisaker Cup, Beverly Polo's 7-goaler Jorge 'Tolito' Fernandez Ocampo Jr. effectively demonstrates an offside cut shot to goal.

The first phase of the swing begins with the preparation of Ocampo Jr. The swing begins prior to reaching the ball allowing him to properly rotate and prepare his swing path for the offside cut shot. Ocampo Jr. uses his left hand with the reins to provide support on the horse's neck and then rotates his shoulders and hip to help get in position at the top of the swing.

From his position at the top of the swing, Ocampo Jr. begins by bringing the mallet down in an "inside-out" swing path (yellow line). This is evident by the mallet's path not moving exactly parallel to the path of the horse but instead in a path that would result in contact and the followthrough moving away from the horse. By keeping his shoulders and hip open during the downswing, it allows Ocampo Jr. to promote that swing path in preparation for contact.

At the point of contact there are a few key components to the offside cut shot seen by Ocampo Jr. Firstly, contact is made slightly further back than an offside forehand or neckshot to aid in contact for the inside to out swing path. The second component is the angle of the mallet when it contacts the ball. The face of the mallet is pointing in the direction that Ocampo Jr. wants the ball to travel. With the open mallet face combined with Ocampo Jr.'s swing path, it creates an offside cut shot that travels away from his horse towards goal.
