Fresh off their C.V. Whitney Cup victory, Gauntlet contenders Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Mariano ‘Peke’ Gonzalez, Lucas ‘Luckitas’ Criado Jr., Adolfo Cambiaso) made their USPA Gold Cup debut at the National Polo Center-Wellington (NPC) against Dutta Corp/Show+ (Joaquin Avendaño, Mariano ‘Nino’ Obregon, Tomas Garcia del Rio, Timmy Dutta).
Igniting the scoring from the field, Cambiaso quickly got Valiente on the scoreboard, as Criado Jr. found early success at the line to take a 3-1 lead. Despite field goals from Obregon and Avendaño, first half fouls committed by Dutta Corp/Show+ allowed Valiente to go a perfect 4 for 4 and take a 6-4 lead at the break. Trading goals to begin the second half, Valiente continued to take advantage of Dutta Corp/Show+’s foul troubles as Valiente’s Criado Jr., Gonzalez and Cambiaso each converted at the line. Despite only shooting 15% in the field, nine goals on ten penalty attempts ultimately secured Valiente the 11-6 win.
